The Brief

What it had to do

  • Work with no signal at all
  • Run on one phone for up to four people
  • Suit a child or a grandparent
  • Install once and keep working

The signal drops in exactly the places where people have the most time on their hands. A plane at cruising height. A night bus on the Prithvi Highway. A waiting room. A village with one bar of coverage.

That is the moment a phone becomes least useful. Most games want an account, an update and a steady connection before anyone is allowed to play, and a group of friends with nothing to do ends up staring at a loading spinner.

So this app asks for none of it. Install it once, turn aeroplane mode on, and the whole thing still works.

What Is in the Box

Seven games and a quiz round, so nobody has to install eight apps.

  • Party
Liar GameSocial deduction and bluffing. Find the liar, fool everyone else and survive the vote, with more than twenty categories.
  • Party
Heads UpCharades at speed. Hold the word on your forehead and guess it from your friends before the timer runs out.
  • Party
Spin the BottleThe oldest way to start a game night, for sleepovers and get togethers.
  • Board

  • Board

More Than Games

A few things worth having on a phone with no signal, bundled in the same app.

  • Nepali calendarBikram Sambat dates with a B.S. to A.D. converter
  • Radio and newsLive Nepali radio and the day's headlines
  • Gau Khane KathaRiddle stories, jokes and festival facts

How We Built It

A game night that has to survive with no server, no login and no signal.

  • Everything ships inside the app

Every board, card deck, question and sound is bundled at install, which is why the iPhone download is close to a hundred megabytes. Nothing is fetched later, so nothing can fail later.

  • No accounts and no servers

Pass and play means there is no matchmaking, no login and no backend to keep alive. That removes the most common reason a small game stops working a year after launch.

  • One app, both stores

The same team ships and maintains it on Google Play and the App Store, so a fix lands in both places rather than one.

  • Free, with one optional purchase

Ads cover the cost of the free version, and a single in-app purchase removes them and unlocks the rest. No subscription and nothing to cancel.
